High Prices: Sugar 7.3%, Rice 4.5%, Wheat Flour 4%, Wheat 2.8%

The local market is witnessing a continuous escalation in the prices of imported basic food commodities, and local products of grains, driven by the decline in the value of the national currency against foreign currencies, and the increase in demand for purchasing goods due to people's fear of the arrival of the "Coronavirus” in Yemen.


The monthly bulletin of price monitoring in the local market monitored the continuation of the increase in sugar prices with an increase of 7.3%, non-basmati rice rose 4.5%, and about 4% for wheat flour, 2.8% for wheat grain and less than 2% for basmati rice, compared to prices in January, according to market data that It is collected from twenty one counties.

In spite of the noticeable abundance of imported food commodities subject to monitoring, price increases were partially affected by the liquidity crisis and the uncontrolled exchange rate fluctuation that was observed between the southern and northern governorates.


All locally produced cereals recorded an increase in prices in all markets, where the average retail price rose slightly by 1.1% for maize and by less than 1% for millet, sorghum and barley.

The price control bulletin indicated that the current prices showed a sharp increase compared to the prices of the same period last year for local grain products by 17.5% for barley and millet, 8.6% for corn and 6% for sorghum.

While the cost of the food basket to help survive the number of 7 people in February continued to rise, recording 38 thousand and 758 riyals, equivalent to $ 62, and an increase of 3% over the month of January.


The cost of the food basket increased significantly by 123% compared to its cost before the war prices in February 2015, while it decreased by 1% compared to the corresponding month of last year in February 2019. Its cost exceeded 40 thousand riyals in nine governorates.

The minimum food basket that helps survive for 7 people per month, as approved by the Food Security and Agriculture bloc, consists of: 75 kg of white flour, 10 kg of red beans, 8 liters of vegetable cooking oil, and 2.5 kg of Sugar, one kilogram of salt added to iodine.


According to the monthly bulletin of price monitoring issued by FAO in the company with the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation, funded by the European Union, Socotra recorded the highest cost of the food basket at 46 thousand and 298 riyals, equivalent to $ 74, followed by Taiz at 44 thousand and 639 riyals, while Al-Jawf recorded the lowest cost of 31 thousand riyals is equivalent to 50 dollars.
