Former US official: Houthi intransigence threatens to fuel the war in Yemen

 Former US military official Bruce Riedel warned of the danger of the Houthi militia - the Iranian arm in Yemen - and its aggressive practices, especially since it was modeled after the bloody model of the "Hezbollah" militia, which has long posed a terrorist threat to the United States, its interests and its citizens.

Riedel - who was previously the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Middle East and South Asian Affairs and an advisor on these two regions in the national security team of four former US presidents - confirmed that the intransigence of the Houthi militia threatens to fuel the war in Yemen.

He pointed out, in statements published on the website of the Brookings Institution think tank in Washington, to the possibility that the Houthis could turn into another version of the terrorist "Hezbollah", especially if the current de facto truce collapses completely and battles flare up again on a large scale.  As it was, prior to its entry into force, on the 2nd of April last year.

 The former US official, who had also served for nearly 30 years in the CIA, confirmed that the Houthi militia is not interested in the success of efforts to revive the armistice, and that its leaders are “in no rush” to establish it again, despite the fact that the six months in which it took place constituted  By the unanimous opinion of observers, a rare period of calm and breathing, for Yemenis afflicted by the conflict.

Almost two years after US President Joe Biden announced, in his first weeks in the White House, that the war in Yemen must end, the ongoing conflict there, as a result of the bloody Houthi coup against his legitimate government, continues even if its pace has calmed down relatively, due to the United Nations armistice, which was implemented for 6 months last year, before the coup gang undermined efforts to maintain it, in early October 2022.

Despite the international diplomatic moves in support of the United Nations efforts to reach a calm, which was extended twice, no permanent ceasefire agreement has yet been reached, nor has the atmosphere been prepared to move forward on the path of finding a peaceful settlement to the conflict, due to Houthi intransigence.
