The American newspaper, The Intercept, said that Chinese diplomacy paved the way for Saudi concessions and cease-fire talks in Yemen, with the absence of US President Joe Biden's administration.

The newspaper added, in a report translated by NewsYemen, that "what is striking here is the clear role of China - and the complete absence of the United States and President Joe Biden - in striking deals."

It quoted Trita Parsi, executive vice president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Government, "After two years of his presidency, China may have made good on that promise."

Decades of militaristic US foreign policy in the Middle East have enabled China to play the role of peacemaker while Washington is stuck and unable to offer much more than increasingly unconvincing arms deals and security guarantees.

“Saudi concessions — including a possible lifting of the blockade and exit from the war — show that their priority is protecting Saudi territory from attack and focusing on economic development at home,” said Eric Sperling, executive director of a foreign policy analysis that has been working to end the war in Yemen for years.

The same newspaper believed that the moves towards achieving a détente with Iran, restoring relations with Syria, and ending the kingdom's years-long war in Yemen may lead to Saudi Arabia being removed from some of the most thorny regional issues.
