Once again, Socotra Island is exposed this year to the effects of an atmospheric depression coming from the Indian Ocean and forming in the Arabian Sea.
Last week, the heavy rains and torrential rains that hit the Socotra archipelago, as a result of the depression in the governorate, blocked roads and caused great damage to the property and homes of citizens.
Local sources told the media that the torrential torrential rains that followed the rains in the "Qa'ara" area, south of the archipelago, blocked roads, flooded citizens' homes and swept away their lands, amid appeals made by the people and officials of the island, which was declared a governorate in 2014.
For days, the island has been witnessing heavy rains, amid forecasts of more rains on the island, with sea turbulence in the coming days.
The depression enters its second week in Socotra, and continues to cause severe damage to residential neighborhoods and facilities, and causes power outages, road cuts and dozens of fishing boats crashing in the areas of "Nujd" and "Qa'ra".
The President of the Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad Al-Alimi, directed to provide assistance to those affected, and made a phone call to the Governor of Socotra Governorate, Raafat Al-Thaqali, to check on the climatic situation in the archipelago.
The deputy governor, Raed Al-Juraibi, said in a press statement circulated in a number of local and Arab media outlets, that a committee was formed headed by him in order to go to the areas of "Nujed" to see the conditions of the citizens and the extent of the damage caused by the torrential rains in those areas as a result of the continued heavy rains a week ago.
He added, "We will start a relief operation for those affected and conduct urgent interventions to lift the siege on the affected areas," indicating that there is coordination with the Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation for Humanitarian Works to implement humanitarian interventions for opening roads to facilitate the movement process, which will start after the end of the depression urgently. .
The Undersecretary of Socotra Governorate, Issa Muslim, had invited organizations and donors to intervene urgently to provide relief to those affected by the rains and floods that hit the south of the island, noting that the southern coastal strip from "Matif to Qa'ara" has been exposed to heavy rains for a week, which caused food spoilage and damaged roads. and fishermen's boats.
The Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation for Humanitarian Works contributed to the relief of those affected by the heavy rains in the areas of "Nojd" and "Qara" south of Socotra, according to Emirati newspapers.
Since 2015, no less than five tropical and tropical cyclones have hit Socotra, causing death and injury to dozens of the island's residents, in addition to destroying large parts of the archipelago's infrastructure.
Socotra is the Yemeni region most affected by the depressions and hurricanes formed in the Indian Ocean, the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, due to its location at sea. The coastal areas on the Arabian Sea are also affected by these natural phenomena resulting from the increasing climate changes.
With the recurrence of these extreme climatic phenomena annually, Socotra has become on a date with tropical and tropical cyclones, which requires intensive government efforts to mitigate the damages of these recurring phenomena and develop proactive practical plans and procedures to secure the island from this enemy that lurks in it every summer. Sometimes attacks her more than once a year.
