On Wednesday, Reporters Without Borders condemned the assassination of an AFP photographer, Nabil Al-Qaiti, near his home in the southern city of Aden, describing the assassination as a heinous crime.

The organization, in a news on its official website, regretted the growing violence affecting journalists in Yemen, where the Houthis sentenced four media actors to death recently.

"Reporters Without Borders" drew attention to "many of the criticisms directed against Nabil Hassan from the various parties loyal to the government of the Islah Party (the Yemeni branch of the Muslim Brotherhood) recognized by the international community, as accusing him of receiving money from the United Arab Emirates.

He was also credited with taking pictures of publications that have many doubts about the authenticity of its origin, as some members of his family were involved in it, and it also included words praising Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of the United Arab Emirates.

In this regard, Sabreen Al-Nawy, Middle East official at Reporters Without Borders, said that the assassination of Nabil Hassan is totally unacceptable and constitutes another blow to the press in Yemen, where the division and media polarization reached a critical point, to the point that journalists became the main target of attacks and violations regardless of the region that they work in. "

It is noteworthy that photographer Nabil Hassan started working with AFP in 2015. The following year, he won second place in the Rory Peck Award for a reportage he accomplished on the Battle of Aden, knowing that he escaped in January 2019 from the Houthi attack on the Anad Air Force Base.

Yemen is ranked 167 on the list of press freedom rankings published by Reporters Without Borders in 2020.
