Next Tuesday, the UN Security Council will hold its monthly meeting on Yemen, to review developments in the military, political and humanitarian situation, especially the issue of restoring the work of the UN armistice, whose renewal has been stalled for more than two months.
According to the council's agenda, the meeting includes the monthly briefing from the UN Special Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, followed by a consultation session with members.
It is expected that the UN envoy will review, in his monthly briefing, the latest developments and efforts made since the last meeting of the Security Council, regarding the revival of the armistice brokered by the United Nations, including his recent moves in the countries of the region in order to convince the parties to the conflict of the importance of returning to the armistice and building on it from In order to reach a comprehensive ceasefire agreement that paves the way for the start of a political process under the auspices of the United Nations that leads to a comprehensive settlement of the conflict that has been going on for nearly 8 years.
A representative of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs is scheduled to present a review of the worsening humanitarian situation in Yemen due to the rise in international prices, in addition to the increasing restrictions imposed on humanitarian workers, especially in areas controlled by the Houthi group. This hinders the ability of relief agencies to meet the growing humanitarian needs in the country.
According to the Security Council, Michael Berry, head of the United Nations Mission in Support of the Hodeidah Agreement (UNMHA), will inform the members of the Council, during the consultation session, about the progress of the mission's work and the difficulties it faces, and it is expected that his briefing will include the threat of landmines and explosive remnants of war to the lives of civilians. Especially after the mission's patrol was hit by a mine explosion a few days ago, according to a statement.
The Security Council, in its last monthly meeting on Yemen, called for urgent measures to be taken to address landmines and explosive remnants of war in the country.
The members of the Council also called on the parties to the conflict to fully cooperate with demining efforts, and the need for donors to expand their support for measures to rid Yemen of this dangerous scourge, which is still the biggest killer of civilians in Yemen.
