The "Reporters Without Borders" organization called on the Brotherhood authorities in the city of Taiz, southern Yemen, to protect journalists who are threatened by the military intelligence in the city controlled by the Islah party, because of their coverage of the massacre of members of the Al-Harq family.

The organization indicated, in a statement, that armed men surrounded the house of two journalists last night, namely, the cameraman for Sky News Arabia, Taha Saleh, who was not at home at the time, and the cameraman for Al-Jazeera, Nayef Al-Wafi, who managed to escape.

According to the statement, the motive behind the attack on the journalists' home was their coverage of the massacre committed by the Islah party militia against the Al-Harq family in the Bir Pasha neighborhood in the city center, where some family members were killed and others were kidnapped.  The case caused an uproar in Taiz.

According to local media, those responsible for the massacre against the family belonged to the Taiz axis, a militia close to the Islah party (which controls part of the region) and the official army.  This militia, whose leader, Majid al-Araj, was killed in an armed clash on August 10, has targeted the family in recent weeks over a land dispute.

“We call for an immediate end to threats against journalists Nayef and Taha (..) It is absolutely unacceptable that those responsible for human rights violations turn against the journalists who write about them,” said Sabrina Banawi, Head of Reporters Without Borders in the Middle East.

Yemen is ranked 169th out of 180 countries in the 2021 World Press Freedom Index issued by Reporters Without Borders.
