Grundberg in Sanaa ahead of a second round of Saudi-Houthi negotiations

The Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, is holding talks with the leaders of the Houthi militia, in Sana'a.

On Monday evening, the UN envoy arrived in Sanaa, on an unannounced visit, and held meetings with the leaders of the Houthi militia - the Iranian arm in Yemen.

Houthi official sources stated that the UN envoy and his team met with the Houthi leader Mahdi Al-Mashat, and other Houthi leaders, in Sana'a, which is controlled by the militias, and that the meeting discussed recent developments related to establishing peace.

It is expected that a second round of consultations will be held between the Saudi and Omani delegations with the Houthi militia, in continuation with the first round that was held in Sana'a last month, and the discussions were described as positive, but none of the participating parties issued any official statement on its results.

On Monday, the US State Department announced that the US special envoy for Yemen, Tim Lenderking, is visiting the Gulf region to "strengthen existing efforts to ensure a new agreement and launch a comprehensive peace process."

"During his visit to Oman and Saudi Arabia, Special Envoy Lenderking will meet with Yemeni, Omani, Saudi and international partners to discuss their concerted efforts to advance the ongoing talks," the ministry added, in a statement.

The ministry affirmed that the United States is "working closely with the United Nations, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Sultanate of Oman, and other partners to build on the United Nations-brokered truce that allowed the longest period of calm in Yemen since the war began, with the aim of supporting an inclusive Yemeni-led political process that allows Yemenis Shaping a brighter future for their country.
