Aden, NewsYemen:

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said it faces challenges visiting detainees in Yemen, adding that "its ability to freely and unimpeded access to conflict-related detainees has so far been limited."

A report published by the "Insan" magazine, published by the ICRC's regional information center, stated that many families do not know the fate of their loved ones. And whether they were alive, or dead, or wounded, or detained. There are still more detainees whose names have not been brought to the negotiating table, and they and their families are still awaiting news of their release.

The International Committee of the Red Cross offered assistance to the parties to the conflict in Yemen to find solutions to these and other cases and give priority to humanitarian considerations, including initiatives to unilaterally release detainees, expressing its readiness to expand the scope of its visits to include all detainees related to the conflict in Yemen.

It confirmed that it does not participate in the political part of the negotiations between the parties, and that this is a task undertaken by the United Nations and the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Yemen, despite its chairmanship of the supervisory committee for the implementation of the prisoner exchange agreement.

The report indicated that the task of the "Red Cross" in this supervisory committee is to provide technical advice to the parties on appropriate ways to implement the release of detainees in accordance with international humanitarian law.

Regarding the nature of the role it plays during the release of detainees in Yemen, the ICRC said that its role is to facilitate the release of detainees as a neutral intermediary.

It stated that it does not interfere in determining the identity or number of those who will be released, because that is the task of the negotiating parties, expressing its hope that all detainees will be released.
