The successive defection of a number of military leaders close to Lieutenant-General Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar, Vice President Hadi, in the legitimate forces and their joining the Houthi militia - the Iranian arm in Yemen - raises many questions regarding the timing, locations, battles and balances of field forces.
At a time when the Houthi militia suffers heavy human losses and successive field defeats in the governorates of Shabwa, Marib, Hajjah and Al Dhale’, and amid societal discontent among the population in Sana’a and Houthi-controlled areas from the group, the defections of 7 of the military leaders in the legitimate forces and which are under the control of the Islah party (the Brotherhood’s arm in Yemen), and announcing its joining the ranks of the Houthi militia to revive the hopes of the group, which mobilized its workers in various authorities and official institutions in Sana’a to mobilize new fighters and push them to the fronts as fuel for the battles to sustain its coup.
On Monday, February 14, 2022, the Houthi militia announced in Sana'a the return of those it claimed to be "the commander of the Al-Orouba Brigade in the Ma'rib front, Brigadier Muhammad Yousef Al-Khudami, the assistant commander of the so-called Sixth Brigade, the Border Guards, the commander of the Al-Azhar sector, Colonel Younis Faisal Al-Zaydi, and the commander of the tasks battalion of the so-called With the 63rd Infantry Brigade, Lieutenant-Colonel Bakr Al-Khudmi", to its ranks.
Brotherhood convoys on the mission to save the Houthis
Two days before these, it announced the return of 4 others: Colonel Tahesh al-Sunna, commander of the 3rd battalion in the 2nd Brigade, the Border Guards of the Yatma Front, Colonel Jamal Naji Alhan, a battalion commander in the 55th Brigade on the al-Kasara Front, and Captain Abd al-Ilah Ahmed al-Hatbani, commander of the reinforcements battalion in the 155th Brigade al-Yatama Front. And Captain Abdul Hakim Naji Aida, the staff of a war battalion in the 2nd Brigade, the Frontier Guard of the Yatma Front.
Houthi media are keen to broadcast photos and videos of scenes of receiving these people chanting the group's sectarian slogan, reinforced by media statements suggesting the continuation and succession of the arrival of (convoys of returnees), according to their expression.
The Saudi-led Arab coalition announced earlier that it had monitored the leaders of the Houthi militia and went to bomb crucial points in Sana’a used by the Houthis to launch marches, noting in the last of these operations, its implementation on Wednesday, February 16, 2022 AD, 17 targeting of the group, which resulted in the destruction of 14 military vehicles and losses human beings in the ranks of the Houthis.
Emergency reinforcements to mobilize and raise morale
Military sources in Sana'a who spoke to NewsYemen believe that the defections of military leaders from Hadi's forces and their joining the Houthi militia comes at a time when the Houthi militia is in dire need of what they described as "emergency reinforcements."
They point out that the Houthi militia exploited these defections in the media to raise the morale of its collapsed fighters, and the defected military leaders later exploited the mobilization and mobilization activities as new faces unaware of the people's suffering and basic needs and the extent of their aversion to the Houthi militia.
The military expert, Ali Al-Nahmi, believes that the Houthi militia is breathing a sigh of relief with such defections, especially in light of field developments and the coalition's precise strikes on crucial points in Sanaa and other governorates during the past weeks.
Betraying local communities and complicating coalition efforts
In his interview with NewsYemen, he considered the timing of the defections and the level of military positions for the dissidents, which clearly mean the failure of the local communities in the Houthi areas and the complexity of the coalition's efforts to clamp down on the group's leaders and paralyze their capabilities in preparation for their complete isolation from local communities.
And at the end of last December, the leader of the Brotherhood and the commander of the Al-Ezz Brigade in Al-Jawf Governorate, Brigadier General Hamad Rashid Al-Hazmi, along with 15 others, defected from the legitimate forces, and joined the Houthi militia.
This comes at a time when 90 local, regional and international civil society organizations are calling on the United Nations, with its 193 members, to classify the Houthi militia as a terrorist group, warning of the real danger posed by its approach to peace in Yemen, and a threat to international peace and security.
Commenting on the extent of the losses among the Houthi fighters, the director of the Giants Media Center, Aseel Al-Saqladi, called earlier, "everyone who has relatives or sons working with the Houthis to withdraw and rescue their children from the doom that the Houthi leads to them."
Al-Saqladi’s call came in the wake of the publication of the Southern Giants Brigades, scenes of abuse of the Houthi militia in Operation Cyclone South, noting the publication of other scenes in which dozens of crews and Houthis on board were crushed.
