Aden, NewsYemen, Exclusive:

Al-Qaeda's targeting of southern forces, whether the Security Belt or the Shabwani Elite, or Hadrami, alone raises a wide astonishment among the southern community.

As soon as Shabwa governorate fell, and parts of Abyan in the hands of the Yemeni Brotherhood militia, al-Qaeda quickly resumed its activities in those areas, after an absence that lasted for years, but it did not target Brotherhood soldiers.

Al-Qaeda considers the Brotherhood a safe haven, and has carried out several assassinations of soldiers in the Shabwani Elite and the Security Belt since August of last year.

The Brotherhood militia does not fight al-Qaeda in any of its areas, whether it is Marib, Shabwa or Abyan, which indicates the existence of coordination between the two parties.

"NewsYemen" obtained documents of investigations carried out at the headquarters of the First Military Region with detainees from al-Qaeda before their release reveals coordination.

The interrogator confirms with them that "they are with the National Army and have not targeted any of its camps since the establishment of the National Army, and that they agree with higher leaders that the elite and the belt are the common enemy."

Musheer Al-Mushari, an expert on jihadist groups, says in an interview with Newsyemen that there is a convergence between al-Qaeda and some of the leaders of the legitimacy, considering that the ideology of al-Qaeda is part of the ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood.

He believes that the Brotherhood, the Islah party, "has taken control of the legitimacy," and in the end, Al Qaeda has become one of the components of legitimacy.

Al-Mushari added that Al-Qaeda was born from the Brotherhood’s approach, and it is activated when they want to attack their opponents, stressing that there are documents published about the use of the Islah party and General Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar of al-Qaeda militants to achieve their goals, as happened in War 94 when the so-called Arab mujahideen were used to invade southern Yemen.

In his interview with Newsyemen, Al-Mashri believes that the reason for al-Qaeda’s focus on targeting southern forces is because al-Qaeda considers the southern forces the biggest enemy, because of the losses that the organization has received at the hands of the Security Belt Forces, the Shabwani Elite and the Hadrami.

Al-Mashri added: These forces are the only forces that have been able to defeat Al-Qaeda militants from the Shabwa, Abyan, and Mukalla regions and this in itself is a great achievement for these forces that have proven to be the only forces in Yemen that have been able to defeat terrorist groups and impose security in their areas.
